A Modern European Farmhouse on Lake Norman

A Modern European Farmhouse on Lake Norman

Custom

Situated directly on Lake Norman in Mooresville, North Carolina, this European farmhouse was designed as a forever home that blends refined architecture with effortless lakeside living. The homeowners envisioned a custom residence where they could comfortably settle into retirement while creating a welcoming gathering place for their children and grandchildren. Their priority was clear from the start: a luxury custom home on the water that felt serene, timeless, and deeply connected to the lake.

Quiet Luxury and Timeless Design

Connection to the setting guided every design decision. The homeowners wanted to experience the lake not only from the backyard, but from the moment they entered the home. Large windows, architectural glass doors, and slider doors were intentionally placed to create uninterrupted views straight through the front door and out to the water. The result is a home that embodies quiet luxury, thoughtful custom craftsmanship, and the relaxed elegance of lakeside Carolina living.

5 Bedrooms, 5 Bathrooms, and a Pool

This 5-bedroom, 5.5-bath custom home reflects a thoughtful blend of modern farmhouse and European farmhouse influences. The architectural approach feels elevated yet approachable, designed to stand the test of time while complementing the natural beauty of Lake Norman. A light, beach-inspired color palette was selected to enhance the lake views and promote a calm, easy-living atmosphere throughout the home.

Openness and Light

The exterior and interior architecture emphasize openness and light through steel look windows, black-framed divided-lite doors, and slim-profile glazing. These features allow for expansive views while maintaining clean lines and architectural discipline. Floor-to-ceiling natural light fills the interiors, reinforcing the seamless relationship between indoors and outdoors. Thermally broken frames were used to ensure energy efficiency without compromising design.

Custom Cabinetry, Statement Island, and Transitional Pendant Fixtures

We heard our client's goal for a home that could host multigenerational family gatherings. This chef’s kitchen features a luxury kitchen appliance suite, high-performance cooking appliances, and a large center island that anchors the space. Custom white cabinetry, detailed custom millwork, and a carefully proportioned statement island create a refined yet welcoming environment. Glass pendant lighting and transitional pendant fixtures add warmth and visual balance without overpowering the space.

Scullery, Walk-in Pantry, Home Office, and Fitness Room

Supporting spaces include a scullery, walk-in pantry, and home office, all designed to enhance organization and functionality. A dedicated fitness room and home gym help make wellness part of everyday life. The 5.5 bath home floor plan ensures comfort and privacy for both homeowners and guests.

More Than a Custom Home on the Water

This custom home was designed to fully embrace its identity as a home on the water. Outdoor living was essential, and the final design delivers with a custom pool, expansive outdoor gathering areas, and a private dock for direct lake access. These spaces support everything from quiet mornings by the water to lively family celebrations.

Accessible for All Ages

One of the most thoughtful aspects of the project was the home’s elevation. Accessibility was a priority for both older family members and young children. The home was carefully positioned to minimize steps at the rear, providing easy access to the pool and outdoor spaces. Keeping the pool deck low eliminated the need for railings, preserving clean sightlines and reducing potential safety concerns.

Main-Floor Bedrooms

The primary bedroom on the main floor was a must-have, along with an additional main-level bedroom for guests. This layout allows visitors easy access to the pool and outdoor amenities while maintaining comfort and privacy. Every decision reflects the homeowners’ desire to create a quiet, luxurious space that supports both everyday living and long-term enjoyment.

Award-Winning Luxury

Balancing a full wishlist with the realities of a waterfront lot requires experience, collaboration, and precision. Through close coordination with the homeowners and Wendy Yeakley, Principal Designer and Owner of Homestyles Interior Design, the final result is a home that feels truly custom in every sense.

This custom European farmhouse on Lake Norman showcases timeless design, intentional planning, and elevated craftsmanship. The project was honored with the Best Plan Design Custom Waterfront New Home in the $2.5–$3 million range at the 2024 Best of the Lake Awards, hosted by the Lake Norman Home Builders Association.
